Care Home Interior Design

At HomeSmiths we are acutely aware of how important it is for those living in a care home to feel that sense of home. For many residents moving out of their family home and into a care environment for the first time, the change can be huge so how the home looks and crucially it makes them feel when they first come in, will make an enormous difference to how a resident settles. With clever use of colour, well thought through lighting, consideration of acoustics, furniture and furnishings with a domestic feel, and art and imagery from the local area to spark happy memories and talking points, we can turn a place of care into a home for the people living there. More and more of our clients are looking at ways to connect with the local community. Creating spaces that promote this and support intergenerational activities is growing ever more important. Looking to the future, care environments need to be able to respond quickly to outbreaks of COVID, Norovirus and similar infections.  A well designed and flexible environment is key here.

We are trained in dementia friendly interior design and understand how care home interior design can make an enormous difference to the physical and mental health and well-being of residents, as well as those caring for them. We understand the importance of colour contrast and how to use light reflectance values to create a supportive, yet homely and non-clinical scheme.  Jacqui’s knowledge of applied colour psychology and how colour affects how people feel in their surroundings play a key role in our work. We also recognise the importance of good lighting and how, as well as making spaces safer for residents to navigate and comfortable for the care team to work in, it supports people’s circadian rhythm, encouraging better sleep patterns. Our designs are also acoustically considered and understanding the well-being benefits of biophilic design, we incorporate direct and indirect elements of nature within our schemes.  Our interiors are designed with the well-being of residents, the care team and visitors in mind.

Testimonial from Project Manager

In our capacity as Employer’s Agent, we worked with HomeSmiths on both the Montgomery Court Extra Care and Bonney Court sheltered housing schemes for West Kent Housing Association. Our role was to co-ordinate the implementation of the interior design schemes prepared by HomeSmiths with each contractor. Throughout this process we found HomeSmiths to be extremely professional whilst remaining very approachable and easy to work with. Both schemes benefited from the quality of the interior design. We would not hesitate to work with them again.
