Project Description

Henley Manor

As a location for a luxury care home, Henley-on-Thames provided so much design inspiration. With accommodation over three floors, residential, nursing and dementia, we used three colour palettes; soft green and blush pink for the ground floor, blues for the first floor and burnt orange and fern green for the dementia community on the top floor.  The principle of colour contrast was applied in all areas of the home, enabling residents to navigate their environment safely.

Corridors and end of corridor spaces were designed to be as engaging and interactive as possible. These areas include a sewing corner, a florist stand, study, ladies’ dressing area, gentlemen’s grooming corner and gardening bench.  The scheme includes many bespoke elements including Henley-on-Thames toile de Jouy fabric designed by Beth Lewin of Bespoke by Evans. The same design was reproduced by Dynasty Wallcoverings, both for one of the lounges on the nursing floor.  Bespoke furniture was also commissioned for the home from Edison & Day. These included some scroll arm chairs for the bedrooms and some of the lounges as well as granite top side tables in the café area. We worked with Sussex based wallpaper designer, Elizabeth Ockford using some of her Oxford Archive Collection as well as commissioning some bespoke wallcoverings for the café and some of the corridors.

A huge amount of work went into the art throughout the 80 bed care home.  This included beautiful bespoke tactile art created by Soozi Jenner of Stitch Creative, gorgeous artwork from Hollie Allen from the Savista team, framed blazers and vintage rowing team photographs in the bar area and framed Henley Regatta programmes from the 1960s. We then also found contemporary and nostalgic photographs of Henley’s famous landmarks, spreads from 1970s magazines showing old recipes, knitting patterns, old seed catalogues and gardening pull outs from Percy Thrower.

The reception area featuring a bespoke coloured wall covering from Panaz, leads into the main communal space within the home; the café and the celebrations room.  The cinema with its starry night ceiling is a dual purpose space which can be used for exercise classes and parties.  The therapy room and hair salon, both with a calming palette, lead off the main reception area.

‘I had the pleasure of working with Jacqui and David on a recent care home installation – from construction through to completion. The HomeSmiths team were extremely professional and thorough, honing in on intricate details that emphasised their fantastic schemes. Jacqui is especially meticulous with her design for dementia. I would highly recommend their design services for future projects.’
